Gun Sense for Kids

The interactive video gun safety curriculum for kids.

Gun Sense for Kids is an interactive video curriculum designed to teach kids a gun safety framework that’s culturally relevant in communities with higher-than-average rates of gun ownership, where many families participate in shooting sports such as hunting and target shooting.

We recommend this curriculum for approximately grades 1-3, but it’s never too late or too early to learn about safety. The program runs about 15 minutes.

Gun Sense for Kids has its roots in Montana’s Be Safe program, which was adopted by the Montana Legislature and has been deployed in-person for over 30 years. Today, we use an interactive video format to explain two sets of rules to kids:

When you’re alone or with your friends:

  • Don’t touch a real gun.
  • If a friend is touching a real gun, leave and tell an adult.

If you’re invited to go shooting with your parents or another trusted adult:

  • Treat all guns like they’re loaded.
  • Never point a gun at anything it wouldn’t be OK to put a bullet hole in.
  • Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you’ve decided to shoot.
  • Always wear good eye and ear protection while shooting.

Everything we teach is backed up with built-in interactive video quizzing and knowledge check scenarios. Elective learning tracks are also available to students, including topics such as safety knowledge about gun-like non-toys (BB guns, pellet guns, paintball guns, etc.), and everything we teach is reinforced with quiz-as-you-go questions, branching scenarios, and rich feedback for every choice the student makes. While average student time in the curriculum is around 15 minutes, it can be shorter or longer depending on elective learning paths and what questions the student gets right on the first try, or needs rich feedback on to select the right answer.

Why choose Gun Sense for Kids?

Unlike other gun safety curricula in use today, Gun Sense for Kids takes a culturally-relevant approach for communities with moderate to high rates of gun ownership and engagement in the shooting sports, and we always respect our students and their experience.

Gun Sense for Kids can be delivered via LMS platforms already in use by schools and other educational groups, or can be delivered directly via any web browser, on desktop or mobile. If there’s an internet connection, we can teach gun safety.

Gun Sense for Kids is both the best and the most affordable gun safety training for kids, and we connect educational institutions with local, state, and national-level organizations who would like to help defray costs for schools, community groups, and regions.

Gun Sense for Kids can be customized for your organization! If your organization is looking to do public service outreach, the curriculum can be branded and localized for your organization and your community, and your group can sponsor schools, community groups, or geographical areas.
